Cazeonvia accident, school shooting

As many of you know, this morning small Cazenovia, Wisconsin had two tragedies. First, a student died in a car accident, and shortly thereafter the Pre-K to 12 school principal was shot by a student. At this juncture, I don't think we'll be able to present much new information on this story. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and Madison.com are two good places for the most up to date information on both stories.

Death Penalty in the Cheese State?

Speaking of my EMT class, last night students were talking about local and national cases of attacks on women, like the Colorado case. One student said of a Wisconsin perp, "I hope he fries."

This is part of what first responders have to deal with, as well as being the first on the scene when someone is dying. Emergency service people talk about these things a lot (without names or specifice - the Wisconsin case I chose above is random, not from class conversation).

I pointed out that Wisconsin doesn't have the death penalty.

Two of my classmates said in unison, "We need to get one."

They're not the only ones who think so, according to this Madison poll: "New poll: Majority favor reinstating death penalty in Wisconsin."

Sometimes there are stories that aren't funny, but you can't help but laugh at the absurdity of them. This is one of those stories.

A 50-year-old woman was injured when the car she was driving was rear-ended as she tried to avoid hitting a cow in the heart of America’s Dairyland, police said.

Vicki Pfahning of Stratford was headed to work Tuesday morning when a cow apparently fell out of a trailer Tuesday morning on Interstate 39/U.S. 51 in this small community south of Wausau, Kronenwetter Police Chief Dan Joling said.

'08 Convention in the Twin Cities

If this report is true, I am very excited.

Republicans have chosen the Twin Cities of Minneapolis-St. Paul for the 2008 presidential convention, GOP officials said Wednesday.

The selection was expected to be announced later today, said the Republican sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

The OTBL crew will have to show some of us around in far Western Wisconsin in '08.

One of my readers and one of my frequent blog reads DJB Rizalist of Philippine Commentary dropped this story on me early yesterday:

US SECRETARY of State Condoleezza Rice and other high-ranking American officials have maintained that the detention of former Agriculture Undersecretary Jocelyn "Joc-joc" Bolante in the US is legal and asked a Wisconsin court to junk his petition for habeas corpus.

In a 12-page memorandum, Rice and her fellow respondents asked the US district court to dismiss Bolante's petition for "lack of jurisdiction." They questioned their inclusion in the suit and said Bolante should have impleaded only his immediate custodians -- like the warden of Kenosha county jail, where Bolante is currently detained. [emphasis added]

Bolante was arrested on July 7 upon his arrival in Los Angeles. He was told that his visa had been canceled by the US Embassy in Manila due to an arrest warrant issued by the Philippine Senate for his failure to appear at hearings on the P728-million [$14.5 million US Dollars] fertilizer fund scam.

The money was allegedly used to fund President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo's election campaign in 2004.

Why does this remind of a scene from Night Court?

Anyway. This is a serious matter. President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo is tough cookie and a very astute politician. However, sooner or later her opposition is going to hit their target. Still, one key word in the story is allegedly and the Philippine press is no fan of PGMA's something we are familiar with.

Bucher to Open Investigation

I was so happy about this news that I called Paul Bucher myself to say thanks.

Waukesha County District Attorney Paul Bucher said he had received a letter from Sen. Mike Ellis (R-Neenah) requesting an investigation into Maistelman's lobbying of Elections Board members, and Bucher said he would open one. The board voted in Brookfield to sanction Green's campaign.

But Bucher said he had limited information and didn't know whether his inquiry would lead anywhere.

"I'll at least open an investigation and begin to gather some of the documents that I think are necessary," said Bucher, who lost last week's Republican attorney general primary to J.B. Van Hollen.

He's right. The investigation may not go anywhere, but it's sure worth a shot.

Hezbollah rallies, declares victory

Although Doyle's latest ethical missteps seem to have grabbed our collective attention, this was going on this morning.

In his first public appearance since the start of his group's 34-day war with Israel, Hezbollah leader Sheik Hassan Nasrallah thanked God for what he called "a divine, historic and strategic victory" over the Jewish state.

The black-turbaned cleric told a crowd of hundreds of thousands of flag-waving
supporters in Beirut's bombed-out suburbs that his guerrillas will give up their weapons only when Israel's "threats" end and the Lebanese government is strong enough to protect the country.

"Today we celebrate a great divine, historic and strategic victory," Nasrallah said.

See, Russ, this is what happens when countries stand down to terrorists. They become emboldened, declare victory, and start making demands.

Both the Baraboo and Portage papers printed my letter to the editor today. I even like the way they headlined it.

Previously, members of Congress could stick new spending amendments onto bills without putting their names on the amendments. They could do it anonymously. We weren't allowed to know who had asked for the new spending.

This was a ridiculous, shameful and dishonest practice. It allowed members of Congress to spend our money on anything they wanted, with no accountability. They never had to answer questions or explain why the taxpayers should be funding their pet projects.

Tammy Baldwin voted to keep this system the way it was. She voted to allow anonymous spending of taxpayer money. Thankfully, she didn't get her way.

I can't wait to get a rebuttal letter.

Hmmm seems to me that Doyle was sending "marching orders" to the Rat members of the Election board. Can the Doyle campaign do anything without it looking shady?

I am sure they will scream and wail like a mashed cat that this coaching of the board was totally above the board but that second quote by Attorney Michael S. Maistelman shows what this whole event was really about. Who cares if we lose in court we are the Doyle camp we ignore the law all the time its all about giving Green bad PR law and pass precedent be damned.

No Anti-War Vote in Sauk County

The Sauk County Board of Supervisors voted down a November referendum on the question "Should the U.S. begin an immediate phased pullout of its troops from Iraq?"

The vote was 15-14 with two members absent. Supporters of the referendum wondered what the Board was afraid of.

There are still several communities holding these referendums in November, and at least two asking voters whether President Bush and Vice President Cheney should be impeached.

Ed Garvey is bribing political candidates

A trip to Minnesota garnered several opportunities to give money to candidates I've never met and, one, Mark Ritchie, whom I have met.

Jim Doyle on Education

What Jim Doyle said about UW tuition (Western Wisconsin Press Club debate, October 16, 2002):

Doyle: As governor of the state of Wisconsin, I’m going to make sure the university is affordable for every single student.

Question: Attorney General Doyle, a follow-up. So, “affordable,” does that mean you would support a 10 percent cap in the next budget?

Doyle: Well, yes. And frankly, 10 percent seems pretty high to me.

What Jim Doyle did: Tuition for Wisconsin students has increased by over 50 percent – at the same time, tuition on out-of-state students was lowered.

Nichols' History Lesson Has no Lesson

I guess in the land of John Nichols one doesn't have to back up any charges with some facts or at least a theory. I liked Nichols' little history lesson of Wisconsin politicians that endorsed candidates beyond their own party. However, when he talks about State Rep. Bob Ziegelbauer's endorsement of Speaker John Gard he calls it an "act of self-service." The only thing Nichols can come up with is the fact that Ziegelbauer is both a legislator and Manitowoc County executive. Nichols implies what Ziegelbauer is doing is nefarious by calling it "double dipping in the public trough." Funny, Manitowoc voters didn't seem to mind him holding both jobs when they elected him county exec. Is Nichols implying Manitowoc voters are dumb or condone corruption? No wonder many outside Madison have contempt for those living in the Peoples' Republic of Dane County. People like Nichols are pretty arrogant.

RE: Feingold on Economics

I saw that one earlier this week, it had me rolling over the floor when I saw the initial proposal.

It makes me wonder if Wisconsin's junior Senator took an Economics course when he was at UW. At least the Economics Department there is quite good; or so I've heard.

Investor's Business Daily schools Feingold on economics

On Monday, the IBD editorial board decided to question Russ Feingold's grasp of economics:

The key difference, of course, is that Flat-Earthers are harmless cranks who continue with their delusions with no discernible effect on public policy. Sadly, the same can't be said for some Democrats.

We refer to a proposal by Sens. Byron Dorgan of North Dakota and Russ Feingold of Wisconsin to "balance" the trade deficit not by market forces, but by government fiat.

Their plan would require any company wanting to import goods into America to first get a government certificate. The certificate would, in essence, have an "exchange rate" that would change each year to make it more and more expensive for importers to bring goods in. Over time, by reducing import demand, it would "balance" our trade, according to the two senators.

This idea, if presented as an Economics 101 paper in any reputable U.S. university, would be given an "F" and the dullards who wrote it placed on academic probation.

Free trade is one of the few things economists of all stripes agree on. We do ourselves and the world a favor by running our current account deficit. Yes, we buy lots of stuff overseas, but we're also investing huge amounts in our own economy — which will make us all richer in the future.

With the Dorgan-Feingold plan, we're getting a whiff of what the Democrats might do if they take back Congress in November. When it comes to the economy, they style themselves as Phi Beta Kappas. On trade, they deserve dunce caps.

Badger state native arrives in Hollywood

Time for a little entertainment news here at the BBA. FOX has a new sitcom on Thursday nights called Happy Hour. The show follows the much more ballyhooed 'Til Death starring Brad Garrett. My wife and I have watched this block of TV a couple of times now, and we enjoyed both shows. Since I'm a geek, I went and did a little homework on both shows, only to learn that Beth Lacke, the female lead in Happy Hour, is a native of little old Eau Claire, Wisconsin. It is nice to see the local gal or guy do good (local to me at least, since we grew up in the same area and are the same ages), and her story is one that I think can be appreciated. So if you like to see Wisconsin natives do well in Hollywood, give Happy Hour a try.

A Slime Avalanche

A question came to me, while being forced to suffer through all the slime ads from the Doyle camp and his Shadow puppets at Greater Wisconsin Committee. All I wanted to do was watch the late packer wrap up shows and all I get is Green and PAC money blah blah blah Green and special interest money Blah Blah Blah.

Here is my question Why is Washington Special Interest money any worse then money from Wisconsin Special Interest groups. Can you think of any Wisconsin special interest groups, that may have given Diamond Jim a few dump trucks full of evil special interest money?

Oh I love the line of BS in the Doyle commercial about the Election board being bipartisan. They don't mention the fact it was the 4 Dolyies and idiot libertarian(Man Ed Thompson sucks)who did Doyles dirty work. How do these people look at themselves in the mirror. If you were forced to shake hands with Doyle or Xoff the first thing you should do is check and make sure you still have your watch.

I can't really believe these slime filled full of bullshat ads will get any traction I don't believe they resonate with the average voter they don't care about PAC Money. We all understand that Doyle is a crook and he has to paint Green as a crook to level the playing field. But unlike selling state contracts taking PAC money isn't illegal.

I wonder do you think the Doyle people and the Shadow puppets had their ads pretty much done and written even before the idiots at the election board even made their ruling.

I am actually looking forward to the next round of polls so we can tease Xoff about all that money spent and the race being a dead heat. ;)

What I want to know is where are the Green ads pointing out Doyles little problems with selling state contracts.

I think its time for the Green Team to become the Mean Team.

Congressman Paul Ryan has done something no one else in Washington could do in getting rid of anonymous earmarks, essentially flipping the bird to an obstructionist Senate.

Congressman Jim Sensenbrenner has finally said what needed to be said about the little murder problem in Milwaukee, essentially flipping the bird to Mayor Barrett who still has his head in the sand.

So my burning little question is which of these Congressmen is better?

I would like to thank Reps Moore, Baldwin, and Obey for showing where they truly are on spending, in favor of spending without end without any accountability.

Remember these examples my friends the next time someone tells you there is no difference between the parties.

Remember, Milwaukee has been run by Democrats for YEARS. They have no one to blame but themselves for the mess Milwaukee is in.

Way to dump the gang squad Art, way to rip off poverty programs Carl, how are you enjoying the cash from a building you never sold Mr Chairman, thanks for all that tough sentencing and throwing out all those gun charges for easy pleas Mr McCann.

All of you Democratic hypocrites need to look squarely in the mirror and take some of the blame yourselves instead of hyperventilating over Congressman Sensenbrenner speaking the truth.

Hold them accountable! Right, Ed?

Ed Garvey says it's time to Hold Them Accountable! By which he means Republican politicians, and a select few Democrats.

But not Tammy Baldwin. She gets a pass.

Kevin at Lakeshore Laments reports that Tammy voted NO on the earmark reform bill - the bill that would have required members of congress to put their names on spending amendments - pork earmarks - they stick onto other bills.

Tammy doesn't want that. She doesn't want to be accountable for how she spends our tax dollars.

Is that what you mean by accountability, Ed? Is that what you meant when you praised her at Fighting Bob Fest?

Wisconsin as Tax and Regulatory Hell

The head of RedPrairie Corp., based in Waukesha, is renewing his call for reforming Wisconsin and Milwaukee from the Tax and Regulatory Hell that currently exists.

John Jazwiec, top executive with Waukesha-based RedPrairie Corp., renewed his call Friday for major tax cuts and an end to "the welfare system" as part of an effort to attract creative people to the Milwaukee area and build a knowledge-based economy.

Jazwiec, who is considering moving RedPrairie's headquarters out of the area because of difficulties finding or attracting strong executive talent here, spoke at the Wisconsin Club to a breakfast meeting of the Independent Business Association of Wisconsin.

"You're supporting a city and a state that is going downhill, not uphill," Jazwiec said.

The chief problems, in his view: high taxes, a welfare mentality, a parochial attitude and a state government that focuses too much on Madison and not enough on Milwaukee.

He decried what he sees as a lack of vision among political leaders in developing ways to encourage growth of a creative class here.

No kidding.

I guarantee four more years of Diamond Jim won't make this place any friendlier to business — that means job creation. For those of you who graduated from Racine Unified, that means more chances to work.

Amazingly, Milwaukee officials think RedPrairie should relocate its HQ to Milwaukee. For what possible benefit?

To deal with the same myopic morons who drove BuySeasons to cancel its decision to move from New Berlin into Milwaukee? To deal with the rampant crime, mob beatings, gang rapes, drive-bys, murders and the gangsta thug culture?

If anything, these — plus the tax and litigation climate in Wisconsin — are reasons for business to impersonate King Arthur and the not-so-brave Knights of the Round Table in Monty Python & The Holy Grail .... "Run away! Run away! Run away! Run away! Run away! Run away! Run away!"

Ed Garvey: Purist or Hack?

Ed Garvey on campaign finance:

Paul Bucher finally said something I agree with. In commenting on Van Hollen's decision to mortgage his house to put cash into the AG race, Bucher said, "I won't mortgage my life for this job."

Bucher, without thinking about it, was condemning money in politics.

He just hates money in politics, Ed does.

Now, Ed Garvey on Congresswoman Tammy Baldwin:

John Matthews of Madison Teachers Inc. introduced Congresswoman Tammy Baldwin and her remarks were right on target with the theme of "Hold Them Accountable."

But he doesn't hold her to the same standards. Here's me, writing about Tammy just a few days ago:

...she wins elections by out-spending her opponents. By a lot. She outspent her opponent 3:1 in 2000. In 2002, it was 7:1. In 2004, 3:1 again.

It’s wrong when Mark Green and John Gard do it. That’s what Garvey said.

And Baldwin’s money isn’t coming from around here. In 2000, nearly 60% of her contributions came from out of state. In 2002, it was 46%. In 2004, 48%.

People in Boston and LA give her money because…they care deeply about south central Wisconsin?

Ed again, summing up (emphasis added):

Someone asked why we do this and Tony* comes to mind along with the words of two people: Martin Luther King Jr., who said, "Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter." And Eli Wiesel, Holocaust survivor, who said, "The opposite of love is not hate. It is indifference to evil."

None of those at the Sauk County Fairgrounds are indifferent to evil. Or cynical. All are hopeful that we will take back our government and return to the quest for social and economic justice.

Indifferent? Silent? Cynical?

When it comes to his allies, Garvey is all three.

Is up for grabs as John Ainsworth is retiring. The GOP nomination was won by Gary Tauchen (disclosure: I am acquainted with Gary). There were four contenders and Gary captured 50% of the vote! Congratulations Gary.

I am informed there is going to be a general election and a teacher from Cecil will be the Democrats candidate. I think with Gary winning 50% in a four way race (especially in that area) he will sail onto Madison this November.

So, if you live up in AD-6 (Portions of Outagamie, Shawano, and Oconto counties) vote for Gary Tauchen!

You Have To Be Kidding Me!

Just saw a Doyle ad. He is criticizing Mark Green for keeping the money Wisconsin candidates were allowed to keep until Doyle got into office and got his toadies on the state election board. Of course, one had to know it was coming.

Kinda like Peg's open records request on Vince Biskupic. I hope Green and Van Hollen will at least swing back.

However back to Doyle's ad. It states politicians don't act like that in Wisconsin. The ad is right of course, instead the preferred way is to reward your contributors with fat state contracts.

Speaking of the AG race. I wonder who Ms. Falk is plotting against? I think the cranberry growers are safe. If I were a leading manufacturer of soy sauce (or other ag based product made in WI) I might be worried, though.

Sheriff Clarke kicks Bobet to the curb and Mac-Mac is defeated. I guess the rest of Milwaukee County wasn't ready to follow the Eastside Moonbats off a cliff into Lake Michigan.

How about Clarke beating the hand picked candidate of the Milwaukee Democratic Establishment.

Oh look a tussle

Well now that the fight card is set is everyone ready for a brawl? Its going to get wild and woolly from here on out. I cant wait, I hope both the Green camp and the Van Hollen camp understand our opponents don't fight by the Marquess of Queensberry rules. Its bar fight time and we need to start breaking bottles.


Think of the Wisconsin we will be living in if Doyle and Falk are in power.

It is time to close ranks and remember who the real enemies are. Be prepared for more sucker punches from Xoff and his slime merchants.

Talk to your friends and Neighbors explain to them how Doyle is selling state contracts. Explain to them what kind of Moonbat Falk is. We will never out spend Doyle and his Masters from WEAC and the Indian Casinos, but we can out work them.

2 Georgia Races May Threaten Democrats' Struggle for Power

Two congressmen face well-known opponents whose bids are aided by GOP redistricting.

ATLANTA — Riding a wave of discontent over the economy, Iraq and gas prices, Democrats are hoping to win enough seats to retake the House of Representatives this November. But their success could also hinge on their ability to keep the seats they already have — and doing so could prove difficult in two key races in Georgia.

Democratic U.S. Reps. Jim Marshall of Macon and John Barrow of Savannah are facing hearty challenges from a pair of former Republican congressmen with name recognition and the ability to raise big money. Bolstering their chances are new district boundaries drawn up by the first GOP-dominated Georgia Legislature since Reconstruction.

The outcome of the races could have broad national implications. The Democratic Party needs a net gain of 15 seats to obtain a majority in the House. Its candidates are posing serious threats to Republican incumbents in states such as Indiana, Connecticut and Pennsylvania.

But Republicans have also identified a handful of vulnerable Democratic incumbents, and are hoping to pick off a few of them to thwart a Democratic return to power.

"Everyone's focused right now on where Democrats can gain seats, and properly so — it's a Democratic year," said Larry Sabato, director of the University of Virginia's Center for Politics. "But if Republicans can steal even a few seats from Democrats, it will probably eliminate the chances of a Democratic takeover.

Some Ground Zero Pictures that you haven't seen

Right Thinking Girl who happens to be married to a WTC survivor has some very thoughtful posts and pictures of Ground Zero that are worth your time. She had a friend whose office was in a building next to Ground Zero. So the photos are from areas where most people couldn't go.

Her husband Sean also has some posts about that day and the people he lost including his first wife. He was and is a member of the Cantor Fitzgerald Firm

RTG had become a friend of mine and I would hope you would keep people like her and Sean in your thoughts and prayers today.

...did anybody else watch Iowa and Syracuse? Double overtime, Hawkeyes leading 20-13, and the Orangemen (Orangepersons?) had a first and goal inside the 2 yard line. I think they had seven total plays from inside the two, thanks to a pass interference call.

And they didn't get in.

Iowa won that game on the road, with their backup quarterback, with a negative four turnover ratio. They're gonna be tough this year.

Yes Milwaukee is a great place by a great lake

This AP article paints Milwaukee in such a great light makes me want to move back there as fast as possible.

I can not help myself, I just like reading what the Milwaukee Apologists have to say when I call their fair city names. Or point out its on way to being Little Detroit or as Tee Bee put it Oakland on a great lake.

Remember Milwaukee has not had a Conservative Mayor in over 100 years. So this mess that is Milwaukee is a shining example of what years of Liberal and at times corrupt leadership will get you.

The Path to 9/11

Hyscience has a post up about The Path to 9/11 and Losing Bin Laden.

After all the cries of Bush failure for not nabbing Bin Laden, it prompts the question: if Clinton botched the capture (on more than one occassion, it appears) why is Bush being held accountable for someone else's cleaning bill?

Good stuff. I may have to watch The Path to 9/11, if it ever makes it out of the can.

Since I'm Down

Have no idea what happened to my mother blog, but I'll post the last thing I had (which Owen linked to) here.

Basically, the gist is that Dr. Steven Kagen's Campaign Manager, Eric Hogensen, has been accused of conducting his own campaign -- Kagen's -- while on state time as an Employee of State Sen. Jeff Plale (D-South Milwaukee).

Here's from the WisPolitics PM Update.

-- The State Ethics Board received an anonymous complaint this morning alleging that Eric Hogensen, campaign manager for 8th CD Dem hopeful Steve Kagen, did campaign work for Kagen while working in Sen. Jeff Plale’s state office.

The e-mail complaint accuses Hogensen of working for Kagen without taking advance vacation time from Plale’s office on September 22 and 23, 2005.

“At best, his actions show callous disregard for important rules put into place in the wake of the caucus scandal,” according to the complaint. “At worst, this violation suggests that his conduct could be the tip of the iceberg.”

State Ethics Board Director Roth Judd has begun investigating the complaint, and said he spoke to Hogensen, who told him the accusations were “absolutely false.” He told Judd that he was on vacation during the times in question in September 2005, and on one occasion the event the complainant cited was for an after-hours function."(Hogensen) said he was keenly aware of the rules and extremely sensitive about them," Judd said.

Hogensen did not return a call for comment.

The complaint argues that Hogensen received an inappropriate amount of $18,000 from Kagen during a five-month time period when the 8th CD race was Hogensen’s second job. The e-mail also takes shots at both Plale and Kagen.

The Journal Sentinel has something on this as well at its "Politics Watch" blog.

The director of the state Ethics Board today said he'd review an anonymous complaint accusing a congressional candidate's aide of campaigning while on the state payroll.

But Ethics Board Executive Director R. Roth Judd noted that the campaign event Eric Hogenson was accused of attending occurred after normal work hours last Sept. 22. That wouldn't violate ethics rules, Judd said.

Hogenson was on the staff of state Sen. Jeff Plale (D-South Milwaukee) at the time and working part time for Democrat Steve Kagen, an Appleton doctor who is running for the 8th Congressional District seat. He did attend a Sept. 22 evening fundraiser for Kagen in Howard, Wis., Hogenson said in an interview. That was after work hours and on a vacation day, he said.

Hogenson called the accusations politically motivated, "completely false" and timed to hurt Kagen, one of three Democrats on the ballot in Tuesday's 8th District primary.

Hogenson acknowledged he didn't ask to have Sept. 22 and Sept. 23 tallied as vacation days until two months later. Rules adopted in 2002 say state workers wishing to use vacation time to campaign must make the request in advance.

If this is true, it just made things very interesting up in Green Bay.

Addendum: RPW has filed a Federal Elections Complaint against Kagen for using the website of his Allergy Clinics to promote his Congressional Campaign.

Followed the instructions to a "T" that RPW list in this Press Release and they work right on.

Far be it for me to disagree with a prominent national pollster like John Zogby, but his op-ed in the New York Daily News has got me scratching my head.

In the five years since the 9/11 attacks, Americans have been told that terrorists and their sympathizers in the Arab and Muslim world are enemies of freedom whose intense hatred of America must be answered with force.

My extensive polling shows something quite different: The vast majority of the Muslim world was fond of us prior to the war in Iraq.

Excuse me, but...what? Don't I recall news clips of Muslim crowds cheering the 9/11 attacks?

Within a few months of the tragedy of Sept. 11, 2001, my firm undertook a poll of 5,345 Muslims in five Arab countries (Morocco, Egypt, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait) and three non-Arab countries (Pakistan, Iran and Indonesia).

The results, for the most part, were heartening: 81% held a favorable view of American science and technology; 64% had a favorable impression of American movies and television, and 68% had a favorable view of American-made products.

Adults under 30 years of age - a huge element of each country's total population - were particularly favorable toward the United States, an encouraging sign.

Huh. What were the numbers like a year before 9/11? Were they that high then, too? Is this poll indicative of prior opinion in the Muslim world, or are they simply part of the post-9/11 sympathy bounce we got from all over the world?

Dunno. Zogby doesn't tell us.

He does make a point of telling us that, because of the Iraq war, Muslims no longer like us as much.

By May 2004, American prestige had plummeted.

Our polling in the region in late 2005 produced similar results.

What had changed minds? Three words: war in Iraq.

Does anybody remember any large amounts of goodwill emanating from the Middle East toward the US...ever? I don't. Middle Eastern countries have never liked us. Even when they're our kinda-sorta allies, their leaders badmouth us. Their people demonstrate against us. Well before 9/11, this was the case. Well before the war.

So what the heck is Zogby talking about?

A very one-sided debate.

A pro-referendum group handed materials out in Baraboo's public schools.

But it's okay, according to the school district. It didn't break any rules.

People Acting in Support of Students — a pro-referendum group — said members set up informational booths to hand out pamphlets about their position on the referendum at all the Baraboo schools' open houses last week and were at Tuesday's orientation session since the school did not have an open house. She said members checked with district officials several times to make sure their actions were in compliance with district rules.

...

Baraboo School District Administrator Lance Alwin said the group obtained permission to be on site and was acting in accordance with district policies, since the day was set aside for orientation and registration and was not considered an official school day.

Yes, students and families were all expected to attend, and teachers were paid to be there. Required attendance does not a school day make, I know. Still - the district knew they'd have a captive audience.

He (Alwin) said the district has no specific policy regarding allowing political groups on school property — it is up to the discretion of the School Board.

I'm sure they're right, in a very legalistic sense. But anybody involved in politics and/or government knows - using government property - public property - to advocate one side of a political debate is a no-no.

At the very least, when one side was allowed to put their tables up, the other side should have been invited. Didn't happen.

And get this part:

Alwin said the group received permission from the School Board before going to any schools. He said the appearances are a way to continue a "community discourse" on subjects of interest to parents.

A community discourse, but with only one side represented.

Would it not be nice if........

For just once Milwaukee didn't make the national news because a gang of animals were either gang beating people to death or gang raping 11 year old girls.

Can anyone name the last time Milwaukee was in the National News spot lite for something positive?

The really sad part is when Tom "Empty Suit" Barrett is up for reelection he will most likely win.

Miller & the Chicago march

I can't verify the source of this comment, but since the email goes back to Miller, I'll move it up to this post in the interest of letting Miller have their say:

Miller Brewing Company has never supported illegal immigration and we have always supported the full enforcement of current U.S. laws.

Miller did not sponsor the Labor Day immigration march held in Chicago.

Going forward, Miller will closely review all requests for support from community and charitable organizations to ensure that we are not indirectly funding or associating our name with advocacy efforts on the immigration issue.

We plan to stick to the business of brewing, marketing and selling great beer.

We told you so

I just wanted to point out this little article in The Independent to all of our state legislators who were hell bent on mandating ethanol earlier this year.

There is an anti-ethanol rebellion brewing, however, but it is not happening on America's highways. The rumbles of protest are being heard instead on rivers, lakes and along its shores, as boat owners discover that ethanol can sometimes be ruinous to their beloved yachts and cruisers.

As more marinas follow the national trend by offering only fuels with the 10 per cent ethanol blend, boat owners find they have no choice but to buy it, even as evidence accumulates that ethanol, benign though it is to the atmosphere, can leave boats dead in the water.

The problems were detailed in a report published by the Boat Owners Association of the United States, or Boat US. They are particularly worrisome for people with older boats fitted with fibreglass fuel tanks. Introduce ethanol to them, and a chemical reaction produces a black muck. The muck and marine engines do not mix well.

Now that wouldn't have been a problem here in Wisconsin, now would it have been? Especially with those two big lakes to our north and east, and a handful of inland lakes. (\sarcasm)

I recall having this conversation with "the" Jake Leinenkugel in college. At the time, Leinie's was still part of the Miller empire, but the entire thing was owned by Phillip Morris, of "BIG Tobacco" fame.

Asked him if the company was facing any backlash for being part of the PM family, and he said no.

Then I asked him if he's told how to run the company from the 'mother company,' as in Miller Brewing.

Again, he told me no. What Miller does, Miller does, they just wanted Leinie's to keep doing what they're doing (remain profittable) and they'd be left alone.

So it should work the other way around. What Miller does, Miller does.

And Leinie's should be left alone.

Berry Weiss, Honey Weiss, and Leinie's Original won't be leaving my fridge anytime soon. I won't punish the three brothers for the sins of the big multi-national parent.

Oh, come on, Jib. Of course we need a dorm. A few other things we need:

- A beer that's low-cal, low-carb, and loaded with calcium.

The local fiscal conservatives, Citizens for Fiscal Responsibility, have a website.

They're leading the charge against our local spend-more school referendum.

Does UW Baraboo/Sauk County need a dorm?

I ask because it sounds like they want one.

There may be a new captain at the helm, but the course will remain the same. That was University of Wisconsin-Baraboo/Sauk County interim Dean Dr. Thomas Pleger's message Wednesday as a committee discussed plans for the school's proposed dorm, which could be up by fall 2011.

Members of the Living and Learning Center Development and Building Committee gathered to get their ducks in a row before a Sept. 7 meeting with the UW-Baraboo/Sauk County Campus Commission — the group that halted plans for the dorm last month. Commission members questioned school administrators' ability to raise funds for the estimated $5.5 million project after its main proponent, former Dean Michael Brophy, left Aug. 1 to take another job.

My first instinct is to say that none of the 2 year UW campuses need dormitories. After all, unlike the UW 4 year campuses, these are not regional schools. They are 2 year schools for local students that may want to continue on to get their bachelors degree at one of the state universities. There would seem to be a demonstrable lack of need given the local student base. If you can explain to me why a UW 2 year campus needs a drom, please do so in the comments.
