RE: Marketing

Congrats on your marketing degree, but this isn't some company trying to sell laundry detergent. There is passion involved here that non-MU folks really don't understand.

This isn't about marketing or branding or selling...it's about backbone. Right now Marquette is pandering to an incredibly tiny sliver of the population in order to avoid ten-fifteen people protesting outside the Bradley Center. They could really inspire a community and roar into the Big East (at least until the games start). It's obvious to everyone involved that the best marketing/financial move would be to go Warriors (they would sell more Warrior gear in the first few weeks than Golden Eagle crap all last year) but Father Wild has decided Indians have sole claim to the Warriors name, and also have veto power.

I am curious as to who else has veto power. If the community decided on Golden Avalanche as their second choice (Warriors will always be first) will they kowtow to environmentalists who will scream that avalanche glorifies global warming? If it's explorers will the Indians again be pissed, because we know they vilify Columbus, the first explorer that comes to most minds. And what about those real kooks who will claim Explorer's is promoting "gas guzzling" SUV's? I can't even imagine what would happen if they somehow wanted Crusaders. Oh my non-denominational God, the Muslims would have a coronary.

By adding the caveat "conform to the school's ideal" to this process, Fr. Wild has made it clear, the name will be nondescript, lame, and unoriginal. Go Blue&Gold, Go Golden Eagles, Go Hilltoppers, Go Gold. In the end, what the hell is the difference?
