Apple Blossom Festival

I wondered why all those cars were parked on Walters Road in front of the Apple Hut on Saturday. They won't be in full swing for a while yet, dispensing local honey, preserves, fresh apples and the best donuts in Rock County.

It appears we have another day of culture added to our calendar in lovely Beloit:

Who ever heard of taffy apples, cider and orchard tours in May?

Not many people. That's why Connie and Fritz Brockhus decided to open up their Apple Hut at 1718 Walters Road for an Apple Blossom Festival Saturday.

The special one-day event celebrated the blooming of the family's 13 acres of apple trees. The Apple Hut is regularly open for business at the end of August when the fruit is ripe for picking, but Connie Brockhus said she just couldn't keep the blooming season to herself.

“The trees were just so beautiful, I wanted to share it,” she said.

And so, the Brockhuses hauled out the apple cider reserves and fried up some of their signature doughnuts, inviting old friends and new friends to come out and enjoy the lovely spring weather.

Youngsters still licking their fingers from the warm treats clambered up into a wagon and enjoyed a tour through the lacy limbs of the orchard.

Ah, well. Next year.
