PUMAs to the rescue!
Back in May, a group of Hillary Clinton supporters formed a new feminist group called Women Count and: so far, so good.
If you’re going to be a “feminist” organization, dedicated to removing unfair barriers to women in society, you can’t start ignoring your own principles just because a particular woman disagrees with you on abortion or guns or corporate tax rates.
Or when a known philanderer who’s been accused of sexual harassment (and worse) just happens to be a powerful Democrat.
Here’s a link to their website, and a link to their blog. They've also got a PAC and a 527, so we'll see what they do with their money. We'll also see if they ever speak out about women’s rights in the Islamic world, although to be fair, their stated purpose is to influence politics over here.
Unlike other feminist organizations which have taken up against Palin because of her conservative views, however, WomenCount says they'll "work to stamp out sexism when we see it on the campaign trail."That’d be nice. It’s always frustrating to see an organization claim to support an ideal, only to ignore that ideal when it becomes politically inconvenient for them to do otherwise.
"To paraphrase the words of one blogger who said it best over the weekend: We will defend Sarah Palin against misogynist smears not because we like her or support her, but because that’s how feminism works."
