BUSH AND ENTITLEMENTS [Ramesh Ponnuru]
An update on yesterday's post: Brian Riedl of the Heritage Foundation [emphasis added] writes, "Under President Bush, 2001-2005 entitlement spending jumped 33 percent (7.3 percent annually). True, much of that is spending on autopilot. But the President failed to reform these runaway entitlements, and also added a massive farm subsidy expansion.
"And that's not counting the Medicare drug benefit, which will cost almost $800 billion in the first decade, and trillions in the decades thereafter. By no standard is that holding down spending."
