The Guns of Corregidor Island.

Yesterday we visited the Island of Corregidor famous for its last but doomed stand against the Japanes in WWII.

I am on the loading end of a mortar (can't recall the caliber but that it's big should be obvious, Augustus seems to recall it was a 12 incher) on the business end is my buddy Augustus (left), The Empress' brother-in-law (center), and the sister of The Empress.

The island is very peaceful and beautiful now. It is hard to imagine what it once was in 1941/42 and once again during the operations to re-take the Philippines. That is what strikes me the most about touring battlefields not the details of the battle (interesting yes moving no) but the contrast between the current state of the field and reason for the site's fame.
