Rembrandt and Friends Tour Milwaukee

But they probably won't be catching a Brewer's game.

In that wonderful Santiago Calatrava-designed building* by the lake, the Milwaukee Art Museum will be presenting "Rembrandt and His Time: Masterworks from the Albertina, Vienna."

The show opens tomorrow (if you didn't rub elbows with the elite last night at the MAM's cocktail special preview and enjoy "remarks by Marian Bisanz-Prakken, curator of Netherlandish drawings at the Albertina"), with 130 drawings, prints and related paintings, including Seascape by Willem van de Velde the Younger, below.

I believe you have to see the original great works in order to gain perspective of them and their place in art, as well as to truly experience the artist's rendering. For example, the color of the Mona Lisa can't be appreciated, even by art lovers, without seeing the original. It is very different - and so much richer - than any reproduction. Rembrandt is another good example; until you see the originals, it is difficult to appreciate the fine detail in these very small works.

The exhibit will be on display through January 8.

*The Milwaukee Art Museum is the first U.S. building designed by Calatrava. The Fordham Spire, soon to grace the Chicago Skyline, is another. CP @ GMC.
