On This Day in Wisconsin History

According to the Wisconsin Historical Society, Wisconsin's first teacher's union was organized on this day, 152 years ago:

1853 - Wisconsin Teachers Association Organized
On this date the Wisconsin Teachers Association was organized in Madison with eight educators participating. The association later became the Wisconsin Education Association Council, which is the modern-day official teacher's union of Wisconsin.

That means public education existed here for a little over 8 years before the union got started.
