The Anti-War Referendum
This is the text of a resolution passed by the Sauk County GOP last night:
We gotta beat this thing.
WHEREAS, the City of Baraboo will have a referendum on its April ballot, calling for an “immediate phased withdrawal” from Iraq; and
WHEREAS, the U.S. military has already begun drawing down the number of U.S. troops in the region; and
WHEREAS, events in Iraq and the Middle East have the potential to change and require further aid from the United States, including military aid; and
WHEREAS, thanks to U.S. military intervention, the people of Iraq are living under democratically-elected governments and enjoying personal and religious freedoms that were impossible under the previous totalitarian regime; and
WHEREAS, democracy in Iraq is still under attack by the forces of terrorism; and
WHEREAS, for the U.S. military to leave quickly would place their budding democracy in a far greater danger; and
WHEREAS, the enemies of the United States have always known they could never prevail against the U.S. militarily; and
WHEREAS, their strategy instead relies on demoralizing the American public, causing us to become tired of a long presence in Iraq, resulting in public calls to abandon that country; and
WHEREAS, passing this referendum is exactly the kind of gesture Al Qaeda, other enemies of the U.S., and enemies of a democratic Iraq are hoping for; and
WHEREAS, this referendum will embolden our enemies while causing our allies and our own troops to doubt our commitment to a democratic Iraq and to the sacrifices our troops have already made;
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Republican Party of Sauk County calls on the City of Baraboo to defeat this referendum on April 4, and instead renew our commitment to our troops, to the spread of democracy and prosperity to peoples who have only known repression and poverty, and to tell our enemies that we will never waver in our beliefs or our commitments.
We gotta beat this thing.
