The Moral Superiority of America
Having the courage of ones own convictions is a trait typically found with those who have moral clarity. In fact, I would argue that it is moral clarity that gives one the intestinal fortitude and intellectual drive to have such courage. To those who have such clarity, the world is viewed in far fewer shades of gray than the other side, whom I like to call the “grayscale relativists” (the liberals, the socialists, the communists, the dictators, the tyrants, Islamists as well as the peacenik pacifist appeasers). The aforementioned list pretty well describes all of "Old Europe", the American Left and many within the US educational establishment (especially on university campuses) all of whom simply cannot bring themselves to admit the obvious regarding the moral superiority of us, the USA.
Now that I have the hair on the back of your liberal neck standing at attention, my point is that if you do not believe in the moral superiority of what our founding fathers created and that to which The Constitution refers as a “more perfect union” here in North America then, by default, you must believe that either something else is morally superior or you are amoral. If you belong to the former, your system of making judgments and decisions sees capitalism as evil, private property rights as inconvenient (unfair or unnecessary), liberty and freedom as quaint notions of a by-gone era, the declaration of independence as a document written by misguided racist slave drivers, incremental confiscation of wealth from the producers to the non-producers of society as "fair" and President Bush as an out-of-control Texas cowboy who is more dangerous than an immoral murderous dictator.
Case in point is that most of Europe (especially the intellectuals) and, unfortunately, large populations of Canada believe that man is not truly free and therefore embrace socialism while most of America believes that man is not born into bondage as an indentured servant to the greater good of "society" or "community". That, in fact, man is free. Therefore, we grew as a great country because of the only system that answers yes to the question of whether or not man is truly free; capitalism. The divide is as profound as the staggering growth and success we have achieved in a short 227 years and is further reflected in the people who have died trying to come to our shores to be free. Socialism has replaced, for all intents and purposes, religion in Europe and we must fight its growth here in America at every turn.
The difference is that capitalism here is not a religion but simply (and profoundly) the application of the most moral economic system ever conceived. Simultaneously, many Americans believe in God far more pervasively than in Europe. This profound juxtaposition of philosophies and morality explains much of the disconnect between 70 plus percent of Americans who supported removing Sadaam by force (moral clarity) and 90 percent of the European population who preferred appeasement and "process", clingging to the moral authority of the United Nations (moral relativism). The American Left and most Europeans have more faith in the moral judgment of the United Nations, an organization where Libya recently chaired the Human Rights Commission and Syria and China vote in the Security Council. Americans with any degree of moral clarity clearly see and understand this as severely flawed and have far more faith in America and its founding articles and ideals. In fact, the silent majority in America truly does, and rightly so, understand the moral superiority of America.
America is an idea and it is the moral superiority of that idea which inextricably includes concepts such as laissez-faire capitalism, liberty, and individual freedom that irritates Socialists as well as the Islamists. Be you a radical for capitalism or a devout believer in God your sense of moral clarity gives you the courage to stand up for your convictions. This is unique in many respects to America and Americans because many of us embrace both because they are not mutually exclusive! It is virtually unheard of and rare in the rest of the world and, in particular, Europe. People wonder why there is contempt, even hatred, for America in parts of the world - the above explains much; it is the oldest of emotions - resentment of success (jealousy) and our freedoms go a long way to understanding the current state of moral uncertainty and moral relativism in the world.
The American Left and most Europeans are really against our moral clarity and our virtues, coupled with the fact we are willing to face the facts; willing to make clear moral judgments and act independently with a sense of righteousness. We need not apologize to anyone for this, we should not apologize for our profits and unmatched success, as it is America, the last and best hope for freedom and liberty in this world, who deserves a huge “thank you” from the rest of the civilized world. The founding fathers of this country understood that our future, and the future of the world, was dependent upon leaving the "Old Countries" and old dogmas behind.
I believe it is time to follow that truth, that rationality - not just in relation to Europe but wherever those flawed ideas surface. Walk tall and be proud to be an American!
