Do What You Can
In a short time, there will be up to 900 people housed at State Fair Park for up to 90 days. During that time, those people will have many needs. Here is our chance to really, really help our new neighbors. Since a lot of us have a day off today, why don't you go to your closet and see if you have some clothes in good shape that you might donate? Many of these people will look for jobs while they are here. Do you have a pair of khaki pants or a collared shirt that you've outgrown or don't wear anymore? Women, do you have a dress that doesn't suit you anymore? Go throw them in the washer and dryer quick, and get them ready for our new guests. How about some dress shoes? Any Mary Kay reps out there have some samples you could give away?
Anyone want to pitch in $13 for a weekly pass for the Milwaukee County bus system? How about lunch boxes so these people can take a lunch to work? Or gift certificates to local restaurants.
I'm sure that once our guests arrive, the people in charge will give us some ideas about what they need and where to take things. Until then, use your heads and get stuff ready. Remember, our new neighbors aren't coming for vacation, they are coming here as a first step in rebuilding their lives. Let's help them by contributing what we can.
