So what is your Survival plan?
First posted at SH, I thought some of you might catch something I missed.
Now that I know my friends in Mississippi are alive and doing as well as they can in that situation, I started doing what I do after ever big disaster. I play the would I have been ready for this and I "game" it out in my head and look for holes in my families survival plan.
I know a lot of people plan for stuff like this but for others they might never give situation like this a second thought.
I have a bit of survivalist in my blood(Really GB you? LOL)so I put a little more effort into my plan but that is me. Everyone should have a plan though.
First the basics,
Food,Fight,Flight and Fix. You have to think short and long term also.
Food: how long could you feed your family if you were in a Katrina situation? ie restaurants and food stores gone. I keep a 2-3 week supply of backpack style dehydrated food in my "bunker" supplies. The food could feed my family of 4 for even longer if needed. This style of food only needs clean water and a way to heat the water to make.(it can be done with cold water but I wouldn't want to make a habit of that)Keep some water in your supplies which is for emergency only(remember to rotate stuff lol)But also know where the 2-3 closest supplies of potable water ie a river creek or a lake is(or water you could make potable with boiling and/or purification tabs). What are you going to do if this situation last longer than your food supplies could you provide food from "nature" if needed. Easier to think about this stuff when you are full and dry and have a fridge full of food.
Fight: Can you defend your family and your survival supplies if needed. Yup I am talking about guns here and ammo. Gun without ammo is just a high tech club. You may need more than your "hunting" rifle or shotgun but those are a good start. I have an assault rifle with over a 1000 rounds sealed in plastic just in case the neighborhood goes to shat. I also have handguns and things like that. Plus I have a friends who we have all agreed to try and get together. Easier for a group to defend itself or go into lagger if attacked. What we are seeing in New Orleans proves civilization is a pretty thin line that can break pretty easily. Could you drive off a hostile force of 5-10 armed men? If you cant you could be in for trouble.
Flight: If area you are in is untenable or being overrun with "bad" guys how and where would you run? Could you walkout if you had to. Get some good Hunting or Military style backpacks so you can carry food water and ammo if you have to hump out. Do you have a plan on where you would go? M and I do.
Fix: works on too levels First Aid supplies and tools to fix machines if they break.
One of the areas I noticed I had neglected was electrical power. I really need to get a Genny or two. Plus fuel to run them for a while. Just like bullets a genny without fuel is a high tech coffee table.
A good ax or chain saw there are a couple of styles of "wind up" radios which don't need batteries. Some good maps of the local and state area you live in. A good GPS if you can get one.
I will add to this as I think of things, feel free to leave Ideas in the comments if you think I have missed anything.
