Single motherhood in the penguin world
Here's a little light fare for today. It seems a penguin in the Brookfield Zoo in Chicago is the first (with the help of zoologists) to be a single mom. Penguins pair up and mate for life because it isn't possible to incubate an egg and search for food all on one penguin's one. Zurita found herself "with egg" after an immature male fertilized it and then abandoned the widowed Zurita (ladies, insert joke here). But their is good news on the horizon for Zurita. It appears their may be an eligible Wisconsin bachelor in her future:
The solitude hasn't been easy. Zurita's been sick a few times. Then she started limping. She's spent a lot of time back in isolation, this time to help her heal. What she really needs is a new mate. The good news is McGill may have found her one. There's a proud little fellow at a zoo in Wisconsin who hasn't paired up yet. He's the right age, and has the right genes.
Hopefully Zurita and this Wisconsin bird hit it off on their first date.
