The Sword in the Stone
This year, the theme for libraries around the country is "Dragons, Dreams, and Daring Deeds." At our library, storytime is all about knights and dragons. Last week family night included a visit from a jester.
Last night was the best family night by far. The library hosted "The Sword and the Stone" performed by the Traveling Lantern Theatre Company. What a great show! There were two actors, both named Greg (though they are from California, so at least one of them is probably spelled Gregg). This play was supposed to be held outside, but it was windy and therefore moved inside the library. According to Greg, or Gregg, "Inside, this is a set. Outside, it's a kite."
There were tons of kids there, and usually, the parents pick up a book or newspaper from elswhere in the library and hardly pay attention to the show. But this show was so entertaining, so fun, and so full of energy that parents couldn't help but watch. Before the show, one of the Gregs (or Greggs) entertained the kids by doing animal impressions and by joking with them. I don't know where that energy comes from, but he was great and the kids loved him.
If you have kids and this play is coming to your library, do yourself a favor and go see it. They performed in Milwaukee last week, and our show was their third of the day yesterday. I'm not sure where else in the state they will be, but please go see it if you get the chance.
UPDATE: They will be in Steven's Point on July 5. I'm sure they will be all over Wisconsin this month, so check with your local library.
