Lance, the thinking that Sabato has is based on the "Reagan" experience of a divorcee running for the President.
Many people forget that Nancy and Ron were married nearly 30+ years before he was elected. They has two children together (Patti and Ron). There's no doubt that a loving relationship was going on there.
My thinking is the Russ's dream is done for 2008. Yes, he'll still have people urging him to run, but his twice-divorced, single status won't win in the 'red states.'
More than being divorced, being single will hurt Russ more. Despite the liberal-feminist dogma, Americans want to see a loving First Lady who supports her husband, but also is a mother-like figure to the public.
Any quick wedding in the next year and a half could only be seen as politically expedite.
Americans have only elected one bachelor President: James Buchanan.
Most historians have ranked him 43rd out of 43 Presidents in terms of importance and performance. He was 15th President. He stood by and let the lead up to the Civil War happen.
